1. ~*~ Chapter 8 Your own Firm ~*~

This chapter mainly begins talking about your own firm. In the chapter they mention mostly about structure and partnership.

Reasons you shouldnt have a partnership is :

    • One person may have the money and the other have the idea, well what happens if the person with all the money quits? Your screwed.
    • You end up fighting because your friends with them.
    • It’s a lot harder than it looks.

Reason’s why people go into partnership is :

    • They are scared they might not have enough funds.
    • They think because there friends everything will be dandy.
    • They might think they can manage their money.
    • They think it will be easier.

Also it’s okey to turn down a project, If another offers more money or if you dont have the time. Don’t have alot of clients. You want to have one you befriend. That one you should provide your best work and always be on call for them. If they like you, they will bring business to you making you plenty more money and customers. So make sure you build a great relationship with them.

  2. ~*~ Chapter 7 Design Assets ~*~

In this chapter I have come to learn many things about the design assets. In products to create something of value it as said that they are mental energy, manual labor, and skills of a designer. This industry uses millions of dollars to produce the product of work. The time a skills of a of a designer become a product. That allow’s the designer to work more quickly, with more options than before, and with less expence.

The main types of Design Assets are:

    • Photography -it plays an important role on a product or project. You must know how to tilt the frame, catch the light and get the corners and edges of a shot. No one shot is going to be perfect so you must take many and pick out the right ones.
    • Fonts - they also play a big role, you dont want a font to squished or to small to where you can’t read or understand the text. In some concept you may want it to stick out more. So trying different fonts works well.
    • Video - This can make and break a product. It shows weather or not the job is good. Video is important because of the different frames, how you shot it, sound and quality.
    • Illustration - The main part of the product is to make sure you have correct illustration.

    Which are followed by :

    -Licensing

    • Royalty Free
    • Right Managed
    • Rights Ready
    • Creative Commons

The Bottom Line -“When you narrow your choices between many images, a comp- or watermarked low resolution of the photograph - can be used in a layout until the client approves the final peice and the rights to the image is purchased.”

  3. ~*~ Chapter 6 Legal Issues ~*~

In this chapter there are several major legal areas that a designer must become familiar with to successfully navigate the buisness world.” The most important out of all these are intellectual property. “The ownership and right to exclusively earn income from creative work is legally protected and transferred by:

    • Copyright
    • Trademark
    • Patent Laws

    To begine with

Intellectual Property : basically saying your career, income etc. is all depending on you bringing your imagination to life and show to the likings of others in your design and creativity.

Copyright is a major role in the design society.Whenever you create a project or any type of art that is your own imagination or creation from the thought, the original, you want to copyright it. If not anyone can take the art you have done and say it is there own. Therefore if you copyright your art then if someone did try to steal your art you have all right to sew them.Copyright laws give the artist full right to take advantage of their creation.Copyright allows you to reproduce work.

Another is a trademark. Unlike copyright, it is reneweable. A trademark is like a logo, a symbol of your store or main idea of your creation as you the creator. With a logo it will be easier to find out who made the product and where it came from, by the name and as said, the logo.

  4. ~*~ Chapter 5 Proposals and Projects ~*~

This chapter mainly explains how a client must charge a customer for the design he or she may want. Alot of people these days struggle with how they are going to charge there work and may be scared if they are charging to much or to little. You have to start off measuring the:

    • Size
    • Layers
    • Time
    • Etc.

Time plays a big part in making a design and the size. Bad business for a customer is if you charge them one price then when they come to get the design it ends up being more because of the time you slacked or that it took longer than you thought. Customer’s love clients who are well organized and give them a straight up price. Like I said before to get the cost of your design you need to break it down mainly dealing with size, time and effort to equal out a fair cost. Do not over charge or the customer will go elsewhere. But if you devote your time and make good quality the customer will continue to keep coming back to you giving you money and business, not to mention they will spread the word about you. A step to figuring out so is keep track of your time and dont slack, like I said good timing and wage is a good way to keep customers.

  5. ~*~ Chapter 4 Marketing ~*~

In this chapter it covers Unique Positioning, Sales Funnels and Relationship Management. To start off with unique positioning. In order for this you must understand what you are seling and the price you are going to sell the art. It also depends on how good you write to a customer about yourself explaining what you can do as for what they’ve asked for. To calculate how much a design will be, you have to break the design down. It’s important to estimate your time and give a full price weather than waiting for you to get done, then asking for more because you didnt know it was going to take that much time. People love to go to clients who are organized and have there stuff well put together.Your proposition must be easy to understand, because your usp reflects what you do. Also customers like to see how you break it down like explaining yourself making it more clear for example :

Good: Advanced Digital Color correction, specializing in fashion, skin tones and lighting.

Bad: Photoshop and other image-related services.

See how the good gives you more details to better understand it? That’s what a customer looks for, the easier to understand what you mean the better and it also shows your being professional about it and really care about the customer and design.

You must also develop soft skills. That is very important. You must find a way to over come being shy. You want to be direct and foward with a customer, showing your professional and so on. Being shy is okey because im sure everyones nervous at first. But get to know the customer a little bit. Get close but not to close.

Another important part is location. Say for instance you live in Orlando and your job is in Orlando but you have to drive to a far city or living expences are expensive especially with how the economy is today. You might be paying more than your earning more. So also with that being said if a customer asks you if they can pay you $50 less than what you would sell the design for say you cant , because next time they will hope you take that off everytime and it just wont be good business and some stress probably added to it. You need to make sure you live not far from your work and stay in a place you can afford so you can make money and be able to spend on you instead of bills etc.

  6. Chapter 3 - The Jobs

In this chapter I have learned that when you get out of school and venture off into the world finding a job with graphic designs you have to make a number of decisions that will shape your career.

Technology will always play a role in a graphic designers career. You have to be careful on the tools you use because every art program is different. You can use multiple but dont use to many because it may come confusing.

Production plays a major role in designing because its how you product the assignment. Production work is not always the best. It takes alot of concentration with conducting, assigning and making sure the coding and everything is right. Even though using all that time is not gonna give you an award, but after you do tons of it, it certaintly will pay off.

  7. Chapter 2 - How Business Thinks

In this chapter it explains basically the risks of making a business. In a business to get started your going to fail mutiple times but if you keep trying and stick to it you will one day be successful. You always got to take a risk , upgrade your graphics and advertise Alot. By doing this you can improve your ability to communicate and advance in the field.

Professional designers need to understand about business is that a few of the people you will work with in your caareer , clients, suppliers, managers, will share your skills training, or way of approaching problems. Every artist and designer is different. We all have our own unique way. Someone else might not think its as amazing as we think or may not feel the same way about it as we do.Everyone’s eye’s and how they look at things are completely different. Some might agree and alot may disagree but dont let that disappoint you.

If you try hard enough and don’t give up, garuntee you Will become successful.

  8. Chapter 1 - The Creative Industry

In this chapter ive read that there are four things you compllete and accomplish in becoming a successful graphic designer. They include the following

    • In House
    •

          - which includes all creative work produced within art, marketing, advertising, and creative departments for the use of the employer firm. The buisness itself is your employer and primary client

    • Small Firm
    •

-Many designers want to work from small design studios. These firms are primarily consulting business ; instead of solely generating recommendations for clients they also produce the work - ads , identities, and even new products.

    • Large Firm
    •

          - These firms are often found in advertising, where brands must plan large scale campaigns across entire regions with many types of media tied into the question.

    • Freelance
    •

-It tends to be a feast or famine scenario when you first start out, but if you learn how to market yourself and set your rates appropriately , you should be able to get assignments either to bridge the employment gap from college to professional or make a full time living as a freelance pro.
